Depends how long you stay at each area. The sanctuary has a little train that goes around giving access to the main areas, you can get on and off as many times as you like. I like to do a complete circuit on the train to get my bearings, then wander around. Great place to visit, regardless of the weather.

The only time you need to pay extra is for photos with koalas or the little crocodiles. Apart from that everything else is free.

It will be quite a long trip on public transport. Train from Brisbane Central Station and changing to bus at Varsity Lakes will take about 2hrs 10 mins. There is a journey planner for public transport (search translink journey planner) that might help your planning and options. Otherwise, maybe consider a shuttle / tour bus service.
