Building on answer above, yes, you can ask at the entrance, but make sure you negotiate price ahead of time. Use your gut if fair or not. If it was me, I'd probably ask at the desk or concierge at your hotel for a solid reference. Should not cost too much and can also include trip in a van or car with the guide who can show you things on the way to Sarnath and back. Also, if you do the latter suggestion, be careful if your guide offers to take you to precise stores to shop. No matter what he/she says, they might be getting a cut of the action and not really taking you to the best store.
