Three people died from floodwater in McDowell County, County Commissioner Michael Brooks confirmed in a livestreamed news conference Tuesday.

McDOWELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The names of a couple who died during weekend flooding in McDowell County have been released. Donald Eugene Griffin and Deborah Griffin, both 69 and from Welch, West Virginia, were identified as the victims, according to West Virginia State Police.

According to the release, Senior Trooper K. M. Saddler conducted a death investigation and identified the deceased as an occupant of a silver Chevrolet Silverado that had reportedly been driving in high water and washed into the Tug River on Sunday, February 16. The truck was located a short time later in the water near Coney Island in Welch.

West Virginia State Police have confirmed that the person killed in the flood this weekend is from McDowell County. Troopers said the man was in a vehicle that was washed away by high water. His body was found in the Tug River Monday. His name has not been released.

More details were released about the three people who died in the McDowell County floods. According to the West Virginia State Police, on Monday, February 17, 2025, Troopers with the Welch Detachment were called to a report of a deceased man in the area of Summer Street in Welch.
