Few details were immediately available but a sheriff's office spokesperson said the avalanche was triggered around 4:45 p.m. in the "Fingers Area" on Berthoud Pass near Winter Park.

The slide happened on Gravel Mountain near Grand Lake just before 2:30 p.m. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center said that three or four people were caught in the avalanche, but were able to get out on their own or with the help of bystanders.
