Indian telecom operator Bharti Airtel says it has signed a deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink to explore providing the U.S. satellite internet giant’s services to customers in India, depending on government approval.

In a significant move for India’s telecom sector, Starlink, the satellite internet service provider founded by Elon Musk, has announced partnerships with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. This collaboration aims to bring satellite broadband services to remote and underserved regions across the country.

Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Vice Chairman, Bharti Airtel, said, “Working with SpaceX to offer Starlink to Airtel customers in India is a significant milestone”

The deals with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, which together control more than 70% of India’s telecom market, could help bring internet connections to millions of people who live in remote areas.

While the Starlink application remains under consideration, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio and Elon Musk have clashed over how the country should grant spectrum for satellite services.

This is the first agreement to be signed in India, which is subject to SpaceX receiving its own authorisations to sell Starlink in India,’ Airtel said in a media note
