Columbia Borough Fire Department took to Facebook to let residents know they are likely smelling methyl mercaptan, which is not hazardous and is coming from a pipe at the recycling center.
Crews checked out the area and confirmed that there was no hazard to the public, but an officer with Hazmat 2 Environmental Fire Rescue did identify a chemical present called methyl mercaptan.
