The statewide Sierra Nevada snowpack, which provides nearly one-third of California’s water supply, began the year in good shape, at 108% of normal.

SODA SPRINGS, Calif. - The Sierra Nevada is in the midst of a dry spell, one of the longest winter periods without notable precipitation in 34 years, the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab said on Tuesday. The last measurable snowfall was on Jan. 4th.

Snow storms caused drivers to be extra cautious traveling I-80 on Tuesday with the higher elevations in the Sierra getting a fresh dumping of snow.

The Sierra snowpack is lagging far behind historical averages, but this week's storms should help matters. Rain is possible throughout the week in the valleys, but the Lake Tahoe area and the northern Sierra could see snow through at least the middle of the month.
