Sunday will start out with light snow across the Chicago area, but temperatures are going to drop and things will remain bitterly cold for an extended period.

A northwest shift in Wednesday's winter storm and warmer than expected temperatures left around 2 inches of snow in Chicago. Most of the precipitation didn't accumulate. Temps and wind chills below zero are forecast for Thursday.

The Chicago area will have a break on Sunday from being under the alert umbrella, but it's just that as the cold starts to move in. Falling temperatures will happen by the afternoon, followed by bitter cold for two days.

Chicagoland is headed into the deep freezer this week, with bitter and dangerously cold conditions moving into the area. Lake-effect snow remains in Chicagoland on Sunday morning, but not too much accumulation is expected,
