A Russian strike on a residential building in central Ukraine killed at least 14 people, including two children, emergency services said, one of many attacks across the country this weekend.

Sergey Efremov, the deputy governor of Russia’s eastern region of Primorsky Krai, was killed after he returned to the Russian frontline from a battle with Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region. He was reportedly travelling in a car blown up by a landmine along with another Russian army officer.

The school in Sudzha, Kursk, 7.5 miles from the Ukrainian border, was being used as a shelter for residents - and was largely full of elderly people, according to Ukrainian officials.
