Idina Menzel reaches new heights in the new Broadway musical 'Redwood,' which opened at the Nederlander Theatre in New York City on Thursday, Feb. 13.

In Redwood, a new Broadway musical about a New Yorker heading west after tragedy, a tree takes up most of the stage. The trunk of the titular redwood is a wide semi-circle that extends from the floor all the way up to the stage-lights above.

“Redwood” gave me a renewed appreciation for “Into the Woods” and its composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim. His show has the same themes, and the song “No One Is Alone,” softly sung by Cinderella, is a wise meditation on loss among the leaves that goes straight for the soul.
