New York City is trying to deter dangerous “subway surfing” through education programs, but some transportation advocates and lawmakers say it's not enough.

Train had been taken from layover track at station; MTA exploring new security measures to prevent further incidents

New York City police are searching for a group of people who stole a subway train and took it for a joyride over the weekend. The department released images and video Wednesday of six individuals who they say commandeered an unoccupied “R” train over the weekend.

Three individuals took a train from a station storage track, ran it for an unknown distance, and posted video of the event.

More than a dozen New Yorkers, many young boys, have been killed or badly injured in recent years while attempting to climb and surf trains.
