A patient who investigators say broke essentially every bone in a nurse’s face, likely leaving her blind, now faces a hate crime enhancement charge in addition to an attempted second-degree murder charge.

Stephen Scantlebury was a Baker Act-patient at Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee Tuesday when he allegedly broke nearly every bone in the victim's face and doctors say there is a high likelihood that she will lose the use of both eyes.

Palms West is not a Baker Act-receiving facility, yet the man now charged with attempted murder was under the mental health hold.
