The ever-popular waka flotilla has drawn a huge crowd of spectators at Waitangi this morning. Over a dozen waka took to the water in a spectacular display, before the kaihoe were welcomed onto the beach by a kaikaranga line.

Hundreds of kaihoe (paddlers) jump aboard their various waka, paddling in front of thousands of visitors. Waitangi Day 2020 marked 80 years since the launch of Ngātokimatawhaorua – the waka taua built for the centennial of the signing of Te Tiriti and today housed at Waitangi.

Waka are woven into annual Waitangi Day commemorations, the main attraction the launching of Ngātokimatawhaorua, which requires at least 80 kaihoe (paddlers). From whakataukī to pepeha to waka ama, waka are a big part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s identity.
