Jan 14, 2023 · The school, James K. Shook School, in honor of Alfred Montgomery Shook’s father, was located on the hill between 12th and 14th Streets, east of current U.S. Highway 41 (Main Street) in Tracy City. It was the stateliest landmark in Grundy County. The building was brick, elaborately trimmed with Kentucky sandstone.

In the early 1870s Tracy City an experimental blast furnace was built by Samuel Jones and owned by the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company.

After 86 years, James K. Shook School burned to the ground 22 May 1976. The Grundy County Times was set ablaze in 1917, and the Herald office suffered an explosion in 1967 and was destroyed by arson in 1978.

Dec 2, 2021 · The former Grundy County High School in Tracy City hosted a dedication and unveiling Tuesday. The building has been undergoing renovation for the past decade and is nearing completion. The “Old High School” was built in 1928 to accommodate the upper grades of the Shook School creating the county’s first high school.

Grundy County High School was founded in 1928, replacing Shook School, which was a grammar school expanded to high school classes. The school was located in Tracy City. The school continued to serve generation after generation until 1997.

Sep 8, 2021 · Shook School burned in 1976. The only remaining building of the historic school is the gymnasium. The Mountaineer Days Festival is coming to Tracy City this Saturday. Started in the late 1960s as “Old Timer’s Day,” the annual fall festival lives on. This year’s event will feature vendors, food, games, live music and an airplane ping pong ball drop.
