In December of 1986, Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn set out with the members of U2 on a several day journey across the desert landscape with the purpose of shooting the artwork for their upcoming untitled album.

May 15, 2017 · In December 1986, while scouting photoshoot locales with photographer Anton Corbijn in tow, U2 spotted a lone-standing tree at Zabriskie Point in the Mojave Desert while driving on California State Route 190.

The story goes that it was Dutch photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn who spotted the tree while motoring along Highway 190 with the band out of Death Valley National Park.

Mar 27, 2022 · In the mid 1980s, U2 traveled to Death Valley, California with photographer Anton Corbijn (Instagram) to create images for a new album inspired by America. While exploring, Corbijn spotted a lone Joshua tree standing in the desert, and thought the negative space around the tree might work well compositionally.

U2's Fallen Joshua Tree is the location where Anton Corbijn took some of the photographs of U2 which appear throughout "The Joshua Tree" album cover art and outtakes. Central to those photo sessions was one lone Joshua Tree in the Mojave desert, which came to be known as U2's Tree.

Mar 30, 2021 · Anton Corbijn, the shy boy from Strijen near Rotterdam. He started as a photographer with Dutch music magazine Oor in 1972. The camera allowed him to put his shyness aside and take front row at concerts and mingle backstage with the artists. His first photo shoot was for Dutch band Solution. He forged a special bond with the band members of U2.

Feb 20, 2023 · On the second day of the shoot, Corbijn spotted a lone Joshua Tree off Route 190 near Darwin – a rare sight as the trees usually grow in clusters. For Bono, it was the religious connotations of the tree that resonated with his spiritual vision of the album, insofar that it was ultimately named after the tree.

For a week, we travelled northern california, to capture vistas and elements of the iconic locations that had been immortalised by the band and Anton Corbijn for the Joshua Tree album; Zabriskie Point, Joshua Tree, etc.
