There is thought to have been a "chapel of ease" to Wrexham parish church as early as 1577: built of wood, it was successively rebuilt in 1728-33 and 1815. [9] The growing population of the area meant that Minera (previously a township of the parish of Wrexham) was created as a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1844.

Dec 12, 2024 · Funding has been secured to carry out urgent repairs on damaged church roof in Wrexham. Heavy winds and rainfall have caused significant deterioration at St Mary Church, in Minera. Cracks in the roof have led to water damage inside the building, causing dampness, flaking paint, mould, and crumbling plaster.

St Mary’s is a nineteenth-century church on the site of a seventeenth-century chapel of Wrexham parish which was demolished in 1864. The new church, for a new parish, was built in 1865-6 to designs of Kennedy and Rogers, partly funded by the Minera Mining Company.
