Sep 9, 2023 · Shape – the military headquarters of the Nato's Allied Command Operations (ACO), which manages all NATO’s operations worldwide – is soon to get a brand new headquarters, following a public inquiry that ended on 31 August.

In exchange, Belgium committed to building a highway between Mons and Brussels, which would make communication with the capital easier. The SHAPE building went up six and a half months later, on 31 March 1967.

The building which was to house the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) was built in three months by France’s military engineers, and 183 officers from nine of SHAPE’s then 12 members soon moved in.

NATO’s peace-driven ambitions are represented through the building’s eight long and four short office wings (seven floors in the long wings, four in the short) intersecting with a central atrium—like fingers interlaced in a symbolic clasp of unity and interdependence.
