Jan 8, 2025 · Started as a protest against fast food and oppressive food systems in Italy in the 1980s, Slow Food is a million-member movement of food activists around the world. Here in the US, we are uniting the joy of food with the pursuit of justice and dismantling oppressive food systems to achieve good, clean and fair food for all.
The history of Slow Food
The Slow Food international movement officially began when delegates from 15 countries endorsed this manifesto, written by founding member Folco Portinari, on December 10, 1989. Our century, which began and has developed under the insignia of industrial civilization, first invented the machine and then took it as its life model.

30 Years • Slow Food USA
The idea of slow food as a counter to the negative impacts of an increasingly globalized industrial food system has grown from a local protest into an international movement. Slow Food International has, for the past 30 years, served as both a catalyst and a hub for that movement.

Ark of Taste • Slow Food USA
The Ark of Taste regional committees mobilize and vet Ark nominations, work with Slow Food International for publication, and encourage educational and professional promotion of biodiversity. We are thankful for their expertise and enthusiasm!
Local Chapters - Slow Food USA
We have over 70 Slow Food USA chapters all across the country taking action to create a food system that works for them and their community. Some chapters emphasize education and school garden programs or supporting farmers markets and CSAs, while others focus on partnerships with community groups or fighting for good food policies.
