Atlantis, also called the Lost City of the Ancients and the City of the Ancestors, Atlantus in Ancient, is a City-ship built by the Ancients several million years ago. It has approximately the same internal space as found in Manhattan.

When Niam's faction created Organic Asuran copies of Doctor Elizabeth Weir and the Atlantis team to work on discovering how to ascend, they built a city-ship on a planet with no Stargate to act as their base of operations.

Stargate Atlantis follows the present-day adventures of Major John Sheppard and his military team from Earth that, along with two dozen other teams, explore distant planets in the Pegasus Galaxy.

On Earth, SG-1 found a small Ancient outpost beneath the Antarctic ice, and although they determined that the city they were seeking was not on Earth, research at the outpost did eventually lead to the discovery of the Lost City of Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy.

Apr 12, 2006 · With Atlantis the only city left free anywhere in the galaxy, the Lantians sank the city beneath the ocean and used the stargate to flee back to Earth. ( Rising pt 1 ) They hoped to preserve the city (by sinking it) against their, or rather their descendants', eventual return.
