
How Do I Connect 00 AWG Wire to a 100A breaker?
Sep 4, 2015 · Feed to the barn is 3 conductor direct burial cable. Two of them look like 00 AWG, guessing, but the wire is a good solid 1/2 inch across. The 100A breaker terminal will fit, looks like, #4 at best. Is there is "reducing" type terminal that will allow me to tight fit the 00 AWG wire and then insert into the breaker?

Here's the problem. When you upsize for voltage drop, you also need to upsize the ground wire in proportion. Normally a #8Cu or #6Al wire would suffice, but you need to bump it. AWG is based on proportion. You bumped 3 AWG sizes for voltage drop, so you bump 3 AWG sizes for the ground. Done! #5Cu isn't made, so you need #4Cu bare.

Per Southwire's spec sheet here the end of the first paragraph reads: All Sizes Rated Both THHN and either THWN (sizes 14, 12, and 10 AWG) or THWN-2 (sizes 8 AWG and larger). It is baffling me that there doesn't seem to be THWN-2 in 12 AWG.
