The Colt Army Model 1860 is a cap & ball.44-caliber single-action revolver used during the American Civil War made by Colt's Manufacturing Company. It was used as a side arm by cavalry , infantry , artillery troops, and naval forces.

The Colt Model 1861 Navy cap & ball.36-caliber revolver was a six-shot, single-action percussion weapon produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company from 1861 until 1873. In failing health, Colt expanded his factory on the eve of the Civil War, and began production of a new, lightweight .44 caliber Army revolver, followed a year later by a .36 caliber Navy version. Samuel Colt died in Hartford on January 10, 1862 at the age of 47.

About 133,000 of these handguns were issued to enlisted cavalrymen (officers had to buy their own sidearms). The revolver issued to Sgt. Robert S. Capen is stamped with serial number 23748, which dates it to 1861.
