What is your favorite 4X game and why? And what other games
Civ 4 still feels like the overall best 4x I own. Granted, nowadays if I'm playing Civ I'm playing Civ 6. Honorable mentions: Endless Legend - fantastic aesthetic and visual design. If battles were more like Humankind this would easily be my top pick X4 Foundations (I'd call this 4x-adjacent) - really cool to experience a first-person "4x" game.

There's a whole sub-family of 4x games where you control the battles. Age of Wonders, various Masters of Orion clones, various Masters of Magic clones, Heroes of Might and Magic (sorta 4x-y), etc. Most grand strategy games come from Paradox, and none of them allow for battle control.

Tips to make the learning process of a 4X game as smooth
This is what I do. My first run in a new 4X I'm not even trying to win, I'm just exploring the game. My only goal is to experience as much content as possible (all the techs, game mechanics, etc.) and try to figure out how it works. If I lose, no problem, start over with the same goal (experience as much content as possible before losing again).
