Locomotive 5917 is a two-cylinder, simple, non-condensing, superheated, coal-fired, 2-8-2 ‘Mikado' steam locomotive and one of five D59 class locomotives that were preserved. Since 2019 it has operated main line steam train tours with The Picnic Train across New South Wales, including the Kiama Picnic Train between Sydney and Kiama .

Preserved Steam Locomotives Down Under - 5917 - Australian Steam
5917 in green livery and 5367 hauling a Lachlan Valley Railway tour train near Holmwood on 13 April 1986. At this stage 5917 was paired with the standard turret tender from 5367, which in turn was paired with the 3650 gallon tender ex-3237.

Steam Locomotive Information
5917 is currently operational with the Lachlan Valley Railway. 5917 was put back into service late March 2014, and is currently based out of the Large Erecting Shop at Eveleigh, NSW. Following completion of its Restoration 5917 returned to Operational condition in November 2007.
