The Ahom (Pron: / ˈɑːhɒm /) or Tai-Ahom is an ethnic group from the Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The members of this group are admixed descendants of the Tai people who reached the Brahmaputra valley of Assam in 1228 and the local indigenous people who joined them over the course of history.

Feb 17, 2011 · Assam lies in the North Eastern part of India. A few Ahom (or Assamese) textiles that are on display in the Assam State Museum at Guwahati. Cotton textiles are presented first and royal garments and costumes follow in the second half. The textiles were in glass cases and in a minimally lit hall.

In this paper, amongst the various contributions of the Ahoms, we will be discussing about their contributions towards the shaping the architecture, monuments and sculptures of Assam, focussing primarily on the Dol – Devalayas and the palaces of the Ahom royals.

Established by Sukaphaa, a Tai prince from Möng Mao (present-day Yunnan Province, China), it began as a Möng in the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra based on wet rice agriculture.

In 1228 Ahom, who had entered the land of Assam, made history in the world with royal rule and also ushered in a change in the cultural background of Assam. The Ahoms' outfit was single and unique. They were dressed in outfits as per social status.

Tais of Upper Burma in 1228 A.D. captured the political power and they were known as Ahoms. Majority of the stone sculptures discovered in the Ambari excavation in the heart of Guwahati bear the characteristic features of the pre-Ahom or Pala style of Assam but certainly not in Ahom style.

The new style of painting was named as the Court style or Royal style after its association with the Ahom Court of Assam (Kalita 2009). The Ahoms seem to have followed the royal patrons of art as in other parts of India (Neog 1981).

One of the most exemplary sites showcasing Ahom terracotta art is the Ghanashyam Dol in Sivasagar District, Assam. The monument stands on the bank of the Joysagar tank, close to the Joysagar group of temples. It is known for its terracotta carvings and unique architectural features.
