I was surprised, since I always held Judo practitioners with great respect for their martial prowess (I have seen some Judo students of my Sensei).

May 30, 2002 · From what I've heard, it sounds like an all-around-good art containing the best techniques from many different arts (including Aikido!). If a Kempo person and an Aikido person fought, the winner only depends on how good the person is, I would think. A black belt Kempo person would easily defeat a white belt (5th kyu) Aikido person.

Nov 13, 2004 · Aikido guy had better watch his range and stay on his feet. Jiu jitsu guy had better watch his wrists and elbows, keeping them in close. Aikido is good at handling clothing grabs which is a big part of Judo. Jiu Jitsu guy would be well advised to shoot leg takedowns from a very close range, not giving the aikido guy the space to blend and redirect.

My primary art is Nihon Goshin Aikido, so safely within the family of Aikido (though not the style that bears that term as its whole name). We do have striking, ground work, standing work (including some close-in, Judo-derived grappling), and weapons.
