The A350 is powered by two Trent XWB turbofan engines that result from a close collaboration between Airbus and Rolls-Royce. The Trent XWB is the world's most efficient large aero-engine, using the best technology and materials while benefiting from over 70 million hours of in-service experience with various Trent versions.

Due to inadequate market support, Airbus switched in 2006 to a clean-sheet "XWB" (eXtra Wide Body) design, powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB high bypass turbofan engines. The prototype first flew on 14 June 2013 from Toulouse, France.

However, Airbus then decided to develop the jet as clean sheet design in 2006 calling the program "XWB" for eXtra Wide Body.
