Southampton Football Club (/ saʊθˈ (h) æmptən / ⓘ) is a professional football club based in Southampton, Hampshire, England. The club competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, after achieving promotion in the 2024 EFL Championship play-off final.

Southampton has a long-standing rivalry with Portsmouth due to its proximity and both cities’ maritime history. Matches between the two sides are known as the South Coast derby. Southampton FC won the FA Cup in 1975-76. Originally, the club used the same crest as the one used by the city itself.

When Southampton were founded, they used the city’s coat of arms – which consisted of red and white colours, along with a shield – as the club’s badge. The Hampshire rose featured and beneath was the lettering ‘SFC’.

The name Southampton originates from the Anglo-Saxon words for a settlement on the River Itchen, Hamwic from Ham = settlement, and Wic = on the river or harbour.
