Tokelau consists of three atolls: Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo. The village on each atoll is governed by its own Council of Elders (Taupulega) which is the source of authority / pule.

On 27 October 2022, the Atafu Tokelau Community Group in Porirua celebrated the vision of the early Atafu pioneers who built the Matauala Hall 35 years ago, a cultural and meeting centre for our community - the first Pacific group in Aotearoa-New Zealand to build an ethnic facility that wasn't church-based.

A way of life that Tokelau communities emulate even today in Aotearoa-New Zealand and elsewhere in the world. The core values and principles of the Atafu Tokelau Community Group reflect the Tokelauan Way.

It embodies a new approach that meshes modern operations systems with traditional support from elders as advisors and spiritual leaders. The Atafu Tokelau Community Group formulated a 5 Year Strategic Plan, 2017-2021.
