Mar 1, 2019 · The ATFL runs from the lateral malleolus anteriorly to the lateral border of the talus. It has a transverse orientation and is best seen on axial images. This is the most commonly injured ligament of the ankle and it is also the first to be injured on the lateral side.

In this study, we pre-operatively assessed injured ATFLs in symptomatic CAI patients by MRI and stress radiography under general anaesthesia. Using surgical findings as the gold standard, we evaluated the use of these two methods as pre-operative assessment tools.

The imaging and clinical findings are consistent with a partial tear of the ATFL and anterolateral capsular injury. The patient is being treated with conservative management, not surgery, using a compression bandage to limit ankle movement, ice application, NSAIDs for pain relief, and anti-edema medication.
