The Convair B-58 Hustler was a great aircraft. This take off run has a surge/backfire from the left inboard engine at the 15 second mark prior to rotation.

Soviet surface-to-air missiles forced the B-47, B-52 and B-58 into a low-level penetration role against their assigned targets. However, the B-58 adapted to the low-level mission quite well.

Aug 5, 2018 · On Sept. 18, 1961 a Convair B-58 Hustler supersonic bomber of the U.S. Air Force SAC (Strategic Air Command) suffered a left main gear failure during take off for a night training mission from Carswell Air Force Base, Texas.

Problems with the afterburners caused intermittent yawing at supersonic speeds. There were acoustical and sonic fatigue problems caused by excessive vibration in the engines. Some fatigue-related cracks began to appear along the rivet lines in the forward sections of the fuselage. There were problems with the wheel braking system.

The B-58A's gross weight at takeoff was 163,000 lb., but once airborne, the Hustler could take on additional fuel that would bring the gross weight to 176,890 lb.
