At the same time it was decided to build ten new 4-4-0s with this boiler, the H88 class. The first engine appeared within months of the 1923 grouping – this was ex-D56 class rebuild No. 1805, seen in the photograph, out-shopped in full GER wartime grey livery with ‘Train Control’ numerals.

May 18, 2021 · Marsden's D56 entry gave only 155 sq ft (14.4 sq m) for the superheater, but the 1922 LM article reported the 226 sq ft shown in Locobase's specs. The 1922 engines used A J Hill's design of feed water heater, which added "largely to its efficiency and economical working."
