The Bijlmermeer (pronounced [ˌbɛilmərˈmeːr]), or colloquially the Bijlmer (pronounced [ˈbɛilmər]), is a neighborhood in the Amsterdam-Zuidoost borough (Dutch: stadsdeel) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The other neighborhoods in Amsterdam-Zuidoost are Gaasperdam, Bullewijk, Venserpolder and Driemond.

The Bijlmer became an island outside of Amsterdam, with soaring crime rates, drug abuse and unemployment. Conditions were ripe for poverty and social exclusion to take root in this distinctly non-white neighbourhood. The Bijlmer gained a negative reputation nationally.

Jul 9, 2023 · The Bijlmermeer, or The Bijlmer as it’s usually referred to, is a high-rise residential area to the South East of Amsterdam. It was to be the suburban pearl of the city. Its apartments were extremely spacious, with lots of windows, lots of light, set in park-like surroundings.

Amsterdam Zuidoost (Amsterdam South East) - also referred to as Bijlmermeer or De Bijlmer - is one of the 8 boroughs (stadsdelen) of Amsterdam. It is an exclave, separated from the rest of the city with no shared borders with Amsterdam, but with good metro lines (50, 53, 54), connecting Zuidoost to the city centre and Centraal Station .

Feb 14, 2025 · From Bijlmer Station, west of the railroad you can find large retail stores, such as IKEA, MediaMarkt and others. The area east of the railroad could be called "downtown Bijlmer", where you can find a more relaxed atmosphere with smaller stores and quick dining facilities.
