From 1776 to 1790, the population of Blandford nearly doubled, going from 772 to 1,416. By 1800, there were 1,778 residents – the largest population ever recorded for the town. A Massachusetts law required there to be a schoolhouse within 1 mile of every home, so that students could walk to school.
