“Flow Blue” entered the English pottery world in response to highly valued Chinese Export porcelains. The fanciful oriental landscapes and romantic themes created in deep cobalt blue caused quite a stir in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, which prompted English potters to imitate the designs and bring their own version to the marketplace.

In Jeffrey B. Snyder’s, A Pocket Guide to Flow Blue (p. 11), a general guideline is given. “The Early Victorian period dates from circa 1835 to 1860, the Middle Victorian period from the 1860s through the 1870s, and the Late Victorian period from the 1880s through the early 1900s.”

On June 7th-8th in 1986, twenty-one lovers of flow blue and mulberry china gathered at the Clock Tower Convention Center in Rockford, Illinois. The result of their labors was the birth of the Flow Blue International Collectors’ Club.

When reading Petra Williams book “Flow Blue China an Aid to Identification” On the Corean pattern She says “It has proved impossible to locate one in blue. HOWEVER, Freeman Lists this as a blue pattern” For a long time, we had only ever come across Corean in Mulberry.

Early Victorian flow blue tends to do better in the Northeast, while Late Victorian does better in the Midwest. Experience is everything. Take your time. Learn the prices and the markets for your particular field of interest. Check eBay results, attend flow blue auctions and come to the annual FLOW BLUE INTERNATIONAL COLLECTORS’ CLUB conventions!
