The spiny toad, spiny common toad, or giant toad (Bufo spinosus) is a species of toad native to the Iberian Peninsula, southern France, extreme northwestern Italy, and North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia).

Evol., 62: 71-86, considered Bufo spinosus a species distinct from Bufo bufo, redelimited its range, noted that African populations are notably distinct from European Bufo spinosus, and suggested on the basis of molecular evidence that it is the sister taxon of Bufo bufo + Bufo verrucosissimus.

The common toad, European toad, or in Anglophone parts of Europe, simply the toad (Bufo bufo, from Latin bufo "toad"), is an amphibian found throughout most of Europe (with the exception of Ireland, Iceland, and some Mediterranean islands), in the western part of North Asia, and in a small portion of Northwest Africa.

The spiny toad was classified as B. b. spinosus. It is found in France, the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb and grows to a larger size and has a spinier skin than its more northern counterparts with which it intergrades. [8] It is now accepted as Bufo spinosus. [9]
