
Carcano - Wikipedia
It was developed by the chief technician Salvatore Carcano at the Turin Army Arsenal in 1890, and was originally called the Modello (model) 91 or simply M91. Successively replacing the previous Vetterli-Vitali rifles and carbines in 10.35×47mmR, it was produced from 1891 to 1945.

The Moschetto mod.91 per TS was the only Carcano gun that needed a change of sights afte the adoption of Solenite cartridges in the early 1900s. This was applied with the Circolare N°281 of 30 August 1903, that solved it just by lowering the top of the front sight blade by 0.5 mm.

In order to give more solidity to the bayonet mount of Cavalry Moschettos mod. 91, in both positions, it is adopted a new model of bayonet latch, to replace the one actually in use. Furhtermore it is adopted, for the same Moschettos, a handguard almost equal to that in use with the Fucile mod.91.

The caliber of a Carcano, actually just the bore diameter, can be found imprinted either on the Mod. 38 and Mod. 91/38 fixed rear sight, or as a later proof mark on the barrel's muzzle end (United Kingdom proof) or breech end (German proof).
