Jul 19, 2024 · Category-8, also known as CAT-8, represents the most up-to-date and best-performing of the “Cat Cable” family of Ethernet Patch Cable standards. Category-8 was fully ratified by the ANSI TIA/EIA standards committee TR43 working group under 568-C.2-1 in 2016.

Category 8 has a maximum Permanent Link Length of 24m (78’) and a maximum Channel length of 30m (100’) when supporting 25Gbps and 40Gbps speeds. Category 8 cabling can support data speeds of 10Gbps and lower at a full 100m (328’) Channel configuration.

GG45 is a variant of ARJ45 that allows for cables terminated with male 8P8C (AKA RJ45) connectors to be plugged into GG45 jacks. However, GG45 cables cannot plug into 8P8C jacks as a protrusion on the socket is designed to activate a switch on the jack for the alternative contact positions.

Category 8 (ANSI/TIA) / 8.1 (ISO/IEC) connectors with RJ45 interface and Category 8.2 (ISO/IEC only) connectors with “non-RJ45” interface such as TERA, ARJ45, GG45, and MMCPRO can be used for building Structured Cabling up to 2000 MHz bandwidth.

The preliminary tests of Cat8 cable have shown it meets connectivity performance standards found in the draft 2.0E of the TIA-568-C.2-1 Category 8 proposed standard and can support the operation of IEEE 802.3bq 25G/40GBASE-T applications up to 30 meters.
