The Chagatai Khanate, also known as the Chagatai Ulus, [10] was a Mongol and later Turkicized khanate [11][12] that comprised the lands ruled by Chagatai Khan, [13] second son of Genghis Khan, and his descendants and successors.

Originating from the Mongol heartland in the Steppe of central Asia, by the late 13th century it spanned from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Danube River and the shores of the Persian Gulf in the west.

The Battle of Herat (1270) was fought between the Ilkhanid forces of Abaqa Khan and the invading Chagatai forces of Ghiyas-ud-din Baraq.Despite initial successes for the Chagatai forces in Khurasan, they were met with a crushing defeat at Herat by Abaqa Khan, who then retaliated by invading Bukhara but later retreated, securing the Ilkhanid-Chagatai border.
