Lancer regiments in the British Army continued to wear czapkas (described as "lance caps") for full dress until 1939 [2] and the modern Royal Lancers still retains this historic headdress for its Lancer Honour Guard. Along with the traditional double-breasted plastron-fronted lancer jacket, it is also still worn by the band of the Royal Yeomanry.

Regulations prescribed a short tailed, high waisted tunic known as a Kurtka [Polish name for jacket], stovepipe trousers [narrowing below the knee to fit tightly around the boot] fastened by laces on the outside of each leg and a Polish four cornered hat or ‘czapka’.

An extremely rare 1873 model Bavarian officer’s czapka. The appearance of the lancer helmet, which was first modified in 1889 and then again in 1915 during World War I, closely resembled the mortarboard of academic dress.

Lancer headgear Czapka was originally 19th-century Polish cavalry headgear, consisting of a high, four-pointed cap with regimental insignia on the front – full name in Polish is czapka rogatywka, to which feathers or rosettes were sometimes added.

The czapka has two main components: the upper and the lower parts, whereby according to the regulation of 1812, the total height of both together adds up to 22 cm. The lower part (B) is made from a single 7 cm wide band of blackened cow leather.

Pułk Szwoleżerów-Lansjerów Gwardii Cesarskiej (Polski)) was a foreign Polish light cavalry lancers regiment which served as part of Napoleon's Imperial Guard during the Napoleonic Wars. The regiment fought in many battles, distinguishing itself at Wagram, Berezina, Hanau and especially Somosierra.

The other companies (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th) wore the Polish traditional tall, square topped shako, called czapka (pronounced chapka). Czapka means simply headwear. It was black and dark blue, with dark blue top pipped white.

Dec 17, 2024 · In 1845 the Lancers adopted a new uniform, the red jacket with blue trim and flat topped uhlan czapka that many of us are more familiar with, and which was worn as the dress uniform of the troop well into the 20th century. Here is the czapka in my collection.

The czapka is completed by its original brass chin-chain, backed by scarlet wool and affixed on the top by a shaped wire hook. The lower body has a black lacquered leather base and is encircled above with heavy silver metallic lace, woven in leaves and floral pattern.
