Most dogs ejaculate in 3 fractions: an initial clear or slightly cloudy pre-ejaculate fraction, the sperm-rich fraction (SRF), and a clear fraction of prostatic fluid. The initial clear fraction is released during the period of vigorous thrusting.

Ejaculation, the forceful expulsion of semen from the urethra, results from rhythmic contractions of the ischiocavernosus, bulbospongiosus, urethralis, and other striated pelvic muscles. Simultaneously, the anal sphincter contracts rhythmically.
