Oct 4, 2001 · Our dojo has just moved to much smaller premesis, and I'm finding it nearly impossible to perform my ukemi correctly in the smaller environment. We have about 10 students in a room about 10 meters long x 5 meters wide.

Apr 16, 2004 · This floor is hard but very springy--it practically tosses you back to your feet after a fall. It's challenging for beginners, though, and we add portable gym mats when we're teaching forward rolls to newcomers. Another Seattle dojo has a plastic-lined box filled with tire dust and covered with tightly stretched canvas.

Jan 10, 2011 · "But cleaning the dojo as a way to humbling people, or as a part of the training, needs more ellaboration to be justifiable imho." First, it puts everyone involved at the same level-there are no black belts of dojo cleaning. It also teaches people responsibility for and commaraderie with their community.
