Is the illustration deceiving, in that it appears to be a concert hall harp but is actually of a size comparable to a lute-mandolin-cittern, or is this thing as big as a concert hall harp?

Without being attuned, you can only use it as if it were a nonmagical instrument of that kind (e.g. a harp, lute, mandolin, etc.); you gain none of the other benefits. As it so happens, bards can use any musical instrument as a spellcasting focus, so this remains true for an instrument of the bards even if you are not attuned to it.

May 16, 2019 · Someone using a Lute of the Battle Ready can use it as their performance if they really want to, but they could also use it to fight and instead perform via singing, poetry, mime, dance or anything else they care to. Unless you are using Countersong or Distraction the type of performance you are using is mechanically irrelevant.
