Rusyns are descended from an East Slavic population which inhabited the northeastern regions of the Eastern Carpathians. In those regions, there are several Rusyn groups, including Dolinyans, Boykos, Hutsuls and Lemkos.

The purpose of this lecture is to define the elements that characterize the ethnic identity of the Rusyns and then to cite and illustrate the U.S. record sources that will lead to the identity of the specific ancestral village in the European homeland where the immigrant originated.

Many Rusyn immigrants first settled in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. In order to locate European records, one needs to first determine the village of origin perhaps identified in U.S. records. A free to use and has excellent historical information and categories of links that will help tell the story of our ancestors’ lives.

This map reveals the location of the settlements of the Carpo-Rusyn ethnic group in Europe in the early twentieth century. As the map reveals, Rusyn settlements straddled the border between the Kingdoms of Hungary and Galicia.
