The EMD GP40 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1965 and December 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 16- cylinder engine generating 3,000 hp (2,240 kW).

A Rio Grande 6-unit helper set -- consisting of GP40-2 3107, GP40 3065, GP40-2's 3113 and 3110, GP35 3047 and GP40 3097 -- heads into the east portal of the Tennessee Pass tunnel. The locomotives had just boosted a 45-car eastbound coal train up the 3% grade from Minturn up to the top of the pass.

Conrail's GP-40's came from Penn Central where they were assigned CR series 3000-3274. By 1995, Conrail retired and sold off all their GP-40's except one (CR 3264).
