Note that this will not work if you have the GTK_THEME environment variable set.

Jul 17, 2022 · I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 22.04 running Gnome and downloaded a custom GTK theme (WhiteSur in this case). It works well with most applications but the theme is not inherited by some snap applications, most notably Firefox, whereas some other snap applications like Spotify do strangely follow the custom theme without issues.

Aug 11, 2013 · I downloaded some themes from gnome-look.org and I extracted and put them in /usr/share/themes folder and when I opened gnome-tweak-tool windows theme was working but GTK+ themes section was showing only the default ones. GTK 2 Themes make use of a gtkrc and other files like .png images. GTK 3 Themes make use of CSS for theming. CSS was chosen because it was easier to work with to make theming less difficult, so you would only need to create the needed CSS files to match the Colors and gradients, etc. of the GTK 2 you want. So there's really nothing to port.
