The Imperial helmet-type was a type of helmet worn by Roman legionaries. Prior to the Empire, Roman Republican soldiers often provided their own equipment, which was passed down from father to son. Thus, a variety of equipment, from different eras was present in the ranks.

A galea (Latin: [ˈɡaɫea]; from Ancient Greek γαλέη (galéē) ' weasel, marten ') [1] was a Roman soldier's metal helmet, most famously worn by the heavy infantry of the legions. Some gladiators, specifically murmillo (myrmillo), also wore bronze galeae with face masks and decorations, often a fish on its crest. [2] .

In the times of the reign of Augustus mass-produced, cheap and simple in design Coolus helmet appeared in as many as nine modifications from A to I. It was actually a copy of the Gallic helmet to which the neck, brimstone and cheek pads were added as a typical Roman distinguishing mark.

These were based on a Gallic form of helmet made in the Coolus district of Marne. In form they were a simple hemispherical bowl made out of bronze with a reinforcing peak running horizontally across the brow and with a larger extension at the back as a neck guard.

The Auxiliary Infantry D helmet, employed during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, had a more conical shape and was often used by auxiliary units.
