Jul 9, 2007 · The Walthers Gas Works are models of industries that abounded in the late 1800’s & early 1900’s, prior to natural gas being shipped via pipelines. These gas works took loads of coal in, and made coal gas - similar to naatural gas - that was used for street lights, cooking, and sometimes for heating, although not as common as gas heat is today.

Firstly because nothing is more redolent of the "back" end of town than a gas works, secondly because it provides an interesting and significant amount of traffic for his railway but mainly because it is an interesting and to date pretty unusual addition to any model railway.
