Gassho-zukuri, which translates to “constructed like hands in prayer,” traces its roots back to the Edo period (1603–1868). The name “Gassho” is inspired by the resemblance of the steep roofs to the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer.

It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, due to the traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.

Gassho-zukuri is a Japanese architectural style with a distinct steep roof. The group of buildings in the villages of Shirakawago and Gokayama are especially well known and are registered as a World Heritage site (Cultural Heritage) by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

More than a dozen gassho-zukuri farmhouses in and around Ogimachi are now functioning as minshuku, family-run, Japanese-style lodgings. An overnight stay at one of these farmhouses is a highly recommended experience, as it is a great way to experience a traditional Japanese family home and get more intimate with gassho-zukuri buildings.
