Tetrahydrofolic acid - Wikipedia
Tetrahydrofolic acid (THFA), or tetrahydrofolate, is a folic acid derivative. In humans, tetrahydrofolic acid is produced from dihydrofolic acid by dihydrofolate reductase. This reaction is inhibited by methotrexate. [1] . It is converted into 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate by serine hydroxymethyltransferase.

Sep 6, 2020 · Chemically folic acid consists of three structural components- para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), a bicyclic pteridine ring, and glutamic acid. The active form of folic acid is known as tetrahydrofolic acid or tetrahydrofolate (THF or FH4), which is a result of the addition of four hydrogen atoms to 5,6,7 and 8 positions in the pteridine ring.

Jun 22, 2022 · In nature, the folates exist as polyglutamate forms, and the major forms of food folates are identified as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF; 5-CH 3 -H 4 folate), 5-formyltetrahydrofolate, and 10-formylfolate (Vahteristo et al. 1997; Pfeiffer et al. 2015).

Folate metabolism is crucial for many biochemical processes, including purine and thymidine monophosphate (dTMP) biosynthesis, mitochondrial protein translation, and methionine regeneration. These biochemical processes in turn support critical cellular functions such as cell proliferation, mitochondrial respiration, and epigenetic regulation.

In the cell nucleus, tetrahydrofolate-polyglutamate (H 4-folate) is the substrate for both nucleotide synthesis and the methylation cycle , by providing or accepting one-carbon atoms . 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-CH 3-H 4 folate) donates a methyl group to vitamin B12, which transfers it to homocysteine, avoiding accumulation of homocysteine in ...
TETRAHYDROFOLATE & THE FOLATE ONE-CARBON POOL
Tetrahydrofolate (FH 4), which is produced from the vitamin folate, (vitamin B 9), is the primary one-carbon carrier in the body. While these carbons are attached to FH 4 they can be either oxidized or reduced. Because of this, folate can exist in a variety of chemical forms.

Folic acid derivatives (i.e. "folates") are acceptors and donors of one-carbon units for all oxidation levels of carbon (except for the most oxidized form - CO2. See biotin above). The active coenzyme form is tetrahydrofolate (THF).
carbon dioxide, some reacts with H4-folate to form 10-formyl H4-folate. In summary, one-carbon metabolism can be presented in a logical and coherent manner, based on a simple general scheme (Fig 1) which is then expanded in discrete steps (Fig 2). All of the

Sep 15, 2000 · At first sight H(4)MPT appears to resemble H(4)folate at the sites where C(1) fragments are carried. However, the two carriers are functionally distinct, as discussed in the present review. In energy metabolism, H(4)MPT permits redox-flux features that are distinct from the pathway on H(4)folate.
