The Heckler & Koch SMG II was a prototype submachine gun intended as a successor to the MP5. It came with a selector which would change the velocity of the rounds fired, so that a suppressor attached to it could effectively muffle the sound of the otherwise supersonic 9x19 parabellum round.

Prototype derived from the HK54A1, first developed for the JSSAP between 1982 and 1983. It was intended to spawn a "family" of modular all-purpose submachine guns. Unique for HK, the SMG I used a simple blowback operation with separate lower and upper receivers and an easy-to-remove 5.8-inch barrel with an integral suppressor.

Sep 20, 2016 · The SMG II is an improved version of the original SMG, with several added features. Instead of using an MP5 magazine, the SMG II uses a new pattern of polymer magazine. The HK21-type sight was replaced with a more classic HK drum sight, and the butt of the stock became a new, smaller sheet metal piece.

In May of this year, I got the rare opportunity to travel to Heckler & Koch’s headquarters in Ashburn, VA, to take a look at some of the experimental and prototype firearms they have located there in their famous “Grey Room”.

SMG I and SMG II were two submachine guns, also stopped at the prototype stage. MP5 PIP is a variant of the classic submachine gun, but stopped as a prototype. MP2000 was an attempt to boost the MP5 series, also a prototype .
